Crime news: A terrifying late-night attack at a co-living Paying Guest (PG) accommodation in Bengaluru’s Whitefield has sent a chill down the spine of the city’s young professional community. A 24-year-old woman, a private bank employee, endured a horrifying ordeal after being allegedly stabbed, sexually harassed, and extorted by a fellow resident. The incident took a dramatic and violent turn when the accused attacker, identified as 37-year-old Sai Babu Chennuru, was later found severely assaulted, allegedly at the hands of the PG management in an act of vigilante justice.

Bengaluru Police have now arrested Chennuru, but are also investigating a counter-complaint filed by him, creating a complex and disturbing case that highlights the growing concerns over safety in co-living spaces.

A Knock at the Door Unravels a Nightmare

The horror began around 3 AM on Tuesday at the Pro4Living PG in the White Rose Layout area. The victim, Rithu (name changed), gave her statement to the police from her hospital bed, recounting the events that shattered her sense of security. She told authorities she heard her doorbell ring and, assuming it was a friend, opened it without hesitation.

In that moment, her life turned into a nightmare. Chennuru allegedly forced his way into her room, locking the door from the inside. He brandished a knife, threatening her into silence. The situation escalated horrifically when he allegedly stabbed her in the left side of her back, causing her to collapse in pain and shock.

According to her detailed complaint, the assault didn’t end there. Chennuru then allegedly stripped her and took photos on his mobile phone, creating a tool for blackmail. He demanded she have sex with him, and when she refused, he chillingly threatened to kill both her and himself. Thinking fast in the face of mortal danger, Rithu told him she was menstruating and asked him to return the next day. This quick-witted plea may have saved her from further harm. Chennuru then shifted his demands to money, asking for ₹70,000. When she told him she didn’t have it, he allegedly snatched her phone and transferred ₹14,000 from her digital payment app to his own account. Before leaving, he issued a final, terrifying threat: stay silent, or he would send her private photos to her parents and friends.

A Violent Twist and a Counter-Complaint

Shaken but alive, the victim managed to call a male friend around 7 AM and was rushed to a nearby hospital for her injuries. Based on her testimony, police registered a case against Chennuru under severe charges, including attempt to murder, sexual harassment, extortion, and assault with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman.

However, the case took an unexpected turn when Sai Babu Chennuru filed his own cross-complaint from a different hospital bed. A native of Andhra Pradesh, he presented a starkly different narrative. Chennuru claimed that he and the victim had been in a consensual relationship for the past two months and had a fight.

He alleged that when he returned to the PG late that night, he was confronted by the management. He claims that two individuals from the management, identified as Pradeep and Shiva, along with three others, brutally assaulted him. He stated he sustained severe injuries to his hands, legs, and face before losing consciousness. Police confirmed that they found him injured the next morning and took him to the hospital, leading to a separate case of assault being registered against the five men from the PG.

A senior police officer commented on the developing situation, stating, “Sai has been arrested and further investigation is under progress. Prima facie, it is found that both Sai and the woman were friends.” This preliminary finding adds another layer of complexity to a case that began as a horrifying assault and has now spiraled into a murky affair of conflicting claims and violent retribution.
