Poonam Pandey: In a casting decision that has sent shockwaves through both entertainment and religious circles, controversial actress and model Poonam Pandey has been chosen to portray one of Ramayana’s most pivotal characters: Mandodari, the wise and righteous wife of Ravan. Pandey will step into this sacred role at Delhi’s world-famous Luv-Kush Ramlila, held annually at the historic Red Fort. Sharing the stage with her will be Arya Babbar, son of veteran actor Raj Babbar, who is set to play the formidable demon king, Ravan.

The announcement immediately erupted in controversy, but an overjoyed Poonam Pandey has met the moment with an unexpected and profound spiritual commitment: a solemn vow to fast for the entire duration of Navratri to purify herself for the role.

A Solemn Pledge: “I Will Pour My Life Into This Role”

Clearly moved by the significance of the character, Pandey took to her social media to share her excitement and her personal pledge. In a heartfelt video message to her followers, she laid bare her dedication to doing justice to the Queen of Lanka.

“I have been given the incredible opportunity to play the character of Mandodari in the world-famous Luv-Kush Ramlila at Delhi’s Red Fort,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. “This is a hugely important character. She was the wife of Ravan, and I am ecstatic to have been given this crucial role.”

She then revealed the spiritual journey she intends to undertake. “Because of this, I have decided that I will observe a fast for the entire Navratri period, so that I can be pure in both body and mind. This will allow me to portray this beautiful character with all my being. Jai Shri Ram, see you at the Ramlila.”

Defying the Protests: A Controversial Casting

The path to this role was not without its hurdles. Soon after her name was announced, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), a prominent Hindu organization, formally objected to her casting. The VHP’s Delhi province minister, Surendra Gupta, sent a letter to the Luv-Kush Ramlila committee, urging them to reconsider their choice.

The letter stressed that Ramlila is not merely a theatrical performance but a living, breathing part of Indian culture and its values. The VHP highlighted that Ramlila has even been recognized by UNESCO for its cultural significance, making it a tradition of international importance. The underlying message was clear: they felt Poonam Pandey’s controversial public image was inappropriate for such a sacred and revered event.

However, in a defiant stand, the Luv-Kush Ramlila committee stood firm by their decision. They dismissed the objections and finalized Poonam Pandey for the role, placing their faith in her ability to portray the complex character of Mandodari.

With this dramatic backdrop of controversy and commitment, all eyes will be on Delhi when the Luv-Kush Ramlila begins its grand run from September 22 to October 3. Poonam Pandey’s performance is now not just an acting role; it’s a statement, and one of the most anticipated and talked-about events of this festive season.
