The Bet That Changed Everything

Before they were married, Akshay and Twinkle were in a serious relationship. Akshay, completely smitten, was ready to pop the question, but Twinkle, hailing from a legendary film family—the daughter of superstar Rajesh Khanna and the iconic Dimple Kapadia—was still focused on making her mark in Bollywood. Her big-ticket film, Mela, co-starring the legendary Aamir Khan and his brother Faisal Khan, was on the brink of release.

“Our affair was in full swing when Twinkle’s film Mela with Aamir Khan was about to release,” Akshay recounted. “So I asked her, ‘Let’s get married.’ But she didn’t want to get married at that time.”

What Twinkle said next set the stage for a life-changing gamble. She told Akshay, “I will only marry you if Mela doesn’t work.”

At the time, this seemed like a surefire way to delay the wedding indefinitely. “Everyone thought Mela would be a massive hit,” Akshay explained. “It was an Aamir Khan film, after all. On top of that, it was directed by the great Dharmesh Darshan. The odds were stacked against me.”

But then, the unthinkable happened. Mela was released to disastrous reviews and became a colossal box-office flop. Twinkle, true to her word, had to say yes. In a hilarious and heartfelt message, Akshay added, “So, sorry Aamir Khan sahib, but your film didn’t work. But because of it, I got married.”
